The Tapojarvi team at Skouries identified and reported several risks at the mine site and designed a phased improvement plan. The work, carried out during the low-traffic Easter period, included expanding parking areas, separating pedestrian and vehicle routes, and introducing new traffic management measures.
“A key improvement was the separation of pedestrians and vehicles at the portal entrance, which reduced the risk of accidents. For example, the employee shuttle bus now loads and unloads passengers in a safe, traffic-free zone,” the award citation notes.
These measures has already contributed to an increase in mine production and the Skouries Underground Minig team has now achieved 969 consecutive days without a lost-time injury (LTI).
“This recognition is a testament to the strong cooperation between Hellas Gold and Tapojarvi in promoting safety at the mine site. Safe working practices are everyone’s responsibility,” says Janne Harju, Tapojarvi’s Production Manager in Greece.
According to Eldorado Gold, Tapojarvi’s initiative is an excellent example of how production growth can be achieved without compromising safety. The new traffic plan enables both safer and smoother traffic flow at the mine site.
