Anas (comparable to the Transport Infrastructure Agency) carried out asphalting on the SS 209 road in Valnerina in December 2023. The road section used TapoEko filler, made from stainless steel slag by Tapojarvi Italia, both as a base layer and as a surface layer.
This road section is the first real-world test of utilizing stainless steel slag in road construction.
Currently, samples are being taken from the road for environmental analyses, so that the TapoEko filler, developed by Tapojarvi Italia, can be included in Anas specifications. The sampling is being conducted by ARPA, the national environmental protection agency of the Umbria region.
– Our goal is to obtain certification for the filler. Thanks to the use of the filler, we can reduce the amount of slag going to landfills while simultaneously reducing the consumption of virgin raw materials, says Tapojarvi Italia’s General Manager Alessio Guidazzi.
The tests will verify the safety of the asphalt after use.
