The competition aims to increase students understanding of the challenges of an industrial circular economy and help them develop sustainable solutions for industrial side streams through new product and service innovations. In 2023, the competition focused on the application of by-products from three industrial sectors: stainless steel, mining and forestry.
The competition received applications from a total of 29 teams from 14 different countries from 22 universities and totalling 71 students represented 43 different nationalities.

The winning team’s innovation may be developed into a sustainable circular economy service product at Tapojärvi.
The winner of the competition was TeamReact, whose idea was to combine fly ash, a by-product of the forest industry, with wood to produce activated carbon for air and water purification.
